The Christian Bible I think that the Bible is the most important work of literature in the world today. The reason it is not number one is because not all people are tolerant of christianity. And even though some people can see past the religious text and get the morals and values it contains, some may not be able to and would not appreciate it or learn from it. Why the Bible would be an ideal book to bring is not necessarily the religious context. The things that make it important are the ideas behind the stories within it. For example, Moses gives the Israelites the Ten Commandments, which are (in no specific order): You shall not worship any other gods beside me, You shall not commit Idolatry (the worship of objects), Honor your mother and father, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet your neighbor, You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, You shall not use the Lord's name in vain, You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor, and Keep holy the sabbath day. All of these except the first two teach a person good traits to have. Honoring your mother and father is important in society today. If your parents have paid thousands of dollars just for you, cared for you when you were sick, and put up with you everyday, they deserve respect. Not killing and not stealing are obviously good rules to follow. Killing is a terrible thing to do, and stealing is just as bad. Most of the Ten Commandments have been set up as laws in society. Sunday for Christians and Saturday for Jews, "Keep holy the Sabbath day" has given us weekends. The bible would be the ideal book to have if you wanted to start a new society. It's had over 30 authors and has insight from many different people. There are millions of bibles in print today, with hundreds of different versions. The bible has a collections writings that are thousands of years old, and it still remains one of the most plentiful sources of good morals and values in the world today.
A College Level Dictionary A dictionary would be an important book to save because it contains nearly all of the non-slang words in our language. If you were bringing any books along, this would be an ideal one to bring. People obviously need to know new words. If you were to start a new society, you would need a school. In school, you need to teach children how to read and pronounce words. A dictionary could teach kids more advanced words, as the basic ones could be easily remembered. If a society has limited vocabulary, learning and writing will be alot harder, considering that the same words will be spammed over and over again. A dictionary would allow for better learning and more interesting writing.
